Felix started feeling feverish and fussy on Friday night, so we spent the weekend trying to keep his fever down and hoping he wouldn't throw up on us (he did anyway).
It seems almost less than news to report another ear infection, but he's got another double one. The doctor mentioned probably seeing a specialist for tubes, but then put him on Augmentin. The tough thing about Augmentin is that it is essentially Amoxocillan with some kind of extra acid in it, and it pretty much causes horrible diaper rashes (poor kid had a bad rash before we started). And Augmentin didn't even touch his last infections. Sigh.
My dad had an allergy test last week, with 57 different scratches on his back. He said that in preparation for the test the tech asked him if he suffered from ear infections or sinus infections and if he had eczema. My dad thinks that maybe part of Felix's problem (what with the ear infections and the eczema) is that he has terrible allergies.
I forgot to ask the doc about that possibility, but since we're seeing him again in 10 days to see if it's cleared up (I'll cross my fingers even though I don't think it will be), I'll ask then.
Thank goodness for Medicaid, because the costs of all this would kill us financially. Poor kid. I really just want him to be healthy!

When Brigs was going through this we barely had insurance and they didn't cover ANY portion of our prescriptions. I just remember that the Augmentin cost us about 100 dollars a pop. The third time we had to get it (with in a 2 month period) I broke down in tears. It was horrible and we had no money. I think someone took pity on us and bought it for us that time. . . .
Yeah, it's expensive, but it's not even the most expensive out there. I think the doc was trying to take pity on us because we have been self-pay. The one that helped last time was rocefin (sp?) and it's a shot. Apparently it's super expensive, but when I told the doc we had medicaid now, he just said "hmmm" and prescribed Augmentin anyway.
If someone else is paying for it and that someone else doesn't care about expense, why can't we just go straight to the one we know works? You know?
Allergies? Really?
I just can't imagine that any child of Brent's would have allergies. [/sarcasm]
I got the name of a good ENT if you are looking for one. I was talking to someone in my ward who loves him. I know you have already been refered some from personal experience, sooo. let me know if for some reason those don't take Medicaid or something like that.
Send me the info please! I haven't been referred yet, but if you've got one...
I'm considering the idea of seeing an allergist as well, and maybe first, to see if that might clear up the rash (my parents think it's probably roseola - whatever that is) and help with all the ear infections.
My bro and sis-in-law suggested goat's milk because it might be a low-level milk allergy. I wish it were easier to figure out!
And yes, Shauna, I've been considering the allergies since I knew Brent had them. Nothing new there, I just wouldn't have connected allergies to ear infections. :P
Augmentin for the baby? Yuck. I can't even take it, as it causes me to feel like I've been punched in the stomach.
Hope he's doing better
Dr. Mathison in Provo for allergies. He's good and has a great bedside manner.
As for Felix, the poor kid is having a major dose of the suck life, give him a Popsicle!
